Ice climbing courses

Welcome to Martin Moran Mountaineering. We are one of Britain's most experienced guiding businesses, established in 1985, offering mountaineering courses, holidays and expeditions in the north-west of Scotland, Norway, the Swiss Alps and the Himalayas. The company is directed by Martin Moran, a British and international IFMGA Mountain Guide. Professional organisation, personal service, qualified instructional staffing and an adventurous spirit are the key ingredients of our success. Browse our pages and follow a ladder of ambition from beginner to expert level then join us to discover the sheer thrill and lasting pleasure of mountaineering.

Location: Our summer Ice climbing courses are organised in the attractive and traditional village of Evolène in the Val d'Hérens which lies in the centre of the Swiss Pennine Alps.
The mighty Dent Blanche (4,357 m) towers above the village and the famous Matterhorn is only 25 km distant. As well as great local trekking on the Arolla ranges we can get to most of the great mountain centres within a 3 hours drive - Zermatt, Chamonix, Saas Fee, Zinal and Grindelwald are all within our compass. Evolène is an ideal base for beginner and expert alike.

Client achievements on past expeditions have included:-

  • new route pioneered on South Face of 6309m Nanda Ghunti in Spring 2001; seven members make the summit See our Expedition Reports page for full details
  • 1st ascent of the magnificent West Ridge of 6596m Nilkanth, a virgin 5919m summit and a new pass on our Spring 2000 expedition
  • 100% success on the trekking peak of Bauljuri (5,922 m) (10 clients in 1993 and 7 in 1997)
  • 8 out of 10 clients reach the summit of 6387m Kalanag on our 1999 Bandarpunch expedition
  • the first ascent of the South Face of Nanda Kot (6,861 m) in 1995 - a major pioneering effort
  • the 3rd ascent (and first in alpine-style) of the pin-sharp Panwali Dwar (6,663 m) in the Nanda Devi range

In Spring we are returning to the Satling Spires and Khatling Valley peaks to continue our pioneering explorations of unclimbed ranges between 5000 and 6000m altitude with itineraries for Technical Climbers, Ski-Mountaineers and Himalayan Novices. Here is a wealth of mountaineering opportunity in a totally peaceful and beautiful valley and the forested trek to base camp is one of the most beautiful in the Garhwal Himalaya.

In Autumn we turn our attention to one of the world's most famous peaks - The Matterhorn of India - Shivling (6543m) which towers over the Gangotri Glacier and holy source of the River Ganges; we will tackle the classic West Ridge, a serious and demanding snow and ice route.

Getting to us: Just 25 km from the main Rhône Valley Evolène is easily reached. Plane (or bus) to Geneva, rapid train to Sion, then the local postbus, or by train to Sion, or drive direct from Calais in 10 hours or less.

Our Chalet Base: Chalet 'Iris' is a peaceful and well-equipped base for our clients just 2 km from the village centre with twin or single accommodation. As in Scotland we provide excellent cuisine and plentiful mountain food during your stay.

Staff: All Alpine classes are staffed by qualified British Mountain Guides and Aspirant Guides. We have a regular guiding team with intimate local knowledge, who are skilled instructors and motivators.
