Winter mountain courses - Welcome to Martin Moran Mountaineering. We are one of Britain's most experienced guiding businesses, established in 1985, offering mountaineering courses, holidays and expeditions in the north-west of Scotland, Norway, the Swiss Alps and the Himalayas. Our three classes will guide and instruct you in the essential technical skills for basic mountaineering and more technical climbing, and promise unforgettable adventures at grips with the winter peaks.

Winter mountain courses - December and January are the ideal months to be roaming the hills, tackling the great Cuillin Ridge and rock climbing on our magnificent sea and mountain cliffs. The days are short and the weather is typically dry, clear and settled. Our winter mountain courses give the keen scrambler and rock climber the opportunity to develop skills, broaden horizons and enjoy some of Britain's finest mountain challenges.

Mountaineer- Max Group Ratio 4:1

What Skills are Covered?

  • basic snowcraft, ice axe arrest, cramponning
  • navigation and routeplanning
  • weather and avalanche hazard assessment

Introductory Climber- Max Group Ratio 3:1

Who is it for? Those wanting a full week of climbing at grades I to IV, previous rock climbing or walking experience advised.

What instruction is given?

- personal snow and ice skills
- belaying methods, multi-pitch climbing, protection gear
- ice and mixed climbing techniques
Where do we climb? The great corries of Torridon, big gullies on Skye, mixed climbs in Glen Shiel; Beinn Dearg, the Fannichs and An Teallach are also possible venues.

Staff: All Alpine classes are staffed by qualified British Mountain Guides and Aspirant Guides. We have a regular guiding team with intimate local knowledge, who are skilled instructors and motivators.

Getting to us: Just 25 km from the main Rhône Valley Evolène is easily reached. Plane (or bus) to Geneva, rapid train to Sion, then the local postbus, or by train to Sion, or drive direct from Calais in 10 hours or less.

Our Chalet Base: Chalet 'Iris' is a peaceful and well-equipped base for our clients just 2 km from the village centre with twin or single accommodation. As in Scotland we provide excellent cuisine and plentiful mountain food during your stay.
